The Reishi mushroom is known as the "mushroom of eternal life" and is considered a symbol of happiness and immortality. It has been highly valued in Japan and China for thousands of years. Its reputation as one of the oldest remedies in human history precedes it to this day. It has been used in China for over 4,000 years and is one of the "Twelve Sublime Medicinal Herbs". In traditional Chinese medicine it is considered to be strengthening and life-prolonging. It is believed to help against cancer and to relieve high blood pressure, liver, kidney and stomach diseases, insomnia, arthritis, bronchitis and asthma. It is said to promote memory, hearing, vision, wisdom, sexuality and well-being. Scientifically proven to have positive effects on the liver, heart, immune system, nervous weakness and an effect against viruses and tumor cells.

The power lies in the spores

The Reishi mushroom is one of the most thoroughly researched medicinal mushrooms in the world. The selection of the part used plays a crucial role: the greatest healing effect is found in the spores of the mature fruiting body, which are responsible for asexual reproduction. These spores have a thick, double membrane and a spiky spore wall. Since the human digestive tract cannot use them in their natural form, special processing is required to increase bioavailability. In this process, the cell walls of the spores are gently broken open and then ground at low temperatures to preserve their effectiveness. This process is very complex: around 1000 kilograms of mushrooms are needed to obtain one to three kilograms of spore powder. Reishi powder is often offered in which the entire fruiting body has been ground, but the spores are preferable due to their more intensive healing effect.

Polysaccharides to strengthen the immune system

The Reishi mushroom has been intensively studied, particularly in Japan. It has been discovered that its healing properties, especially those of the spores, are due to the diverse ingredients and their interaction. In addition to the fiber, polysaccharides and triterpenes are particularly important. Polysaccharides, complex carbohydrates, are essential sources of energy for the body. In this case, these are sulfated polysaccharides, which are considered antiviral and can prevent flu and other viral diseases such as hepatitis and herpes. These are so effective that they make it more difficult for pathogens to penetrate. Positive effects have also been observed in the immunodeficiency disease HIV.

In general, polysaccharides support the human immune system and alleviate allergies. A Japanese university has shown that the ingredients of the Reishi mushroom have an inhibitory effect on tumors due to the increased activity of macrophages, the immune cells.

This anti-cancer effect results from the interaction of polysaccharides and triterpenes: while polysaccharides stimulate the immune system, triterpenes have a toxic effect on cancer cells. Other anti-inflammatory and cancer-preventing ingredients in the spores such as proteins, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins also contribute to the overall effect.
